Issue 38 Artists Announced!!
We are excited to announce the featured and contributing artists for Issue 38! We have three great features for you in this issue. Scroll all the way down to see the complete list of contributing artists.
Our cover artist and first featured interview is with the photographer, Paul Mpagi Sepuya. Paul has been one of the brightest stars in contemporary photography over the last several years, with major solo exhibitions at New York’s Bortolami and Yancey Richardson galleries, Chicago’s DOCUMENT Gallery, Galerie Peter Kilchman in Zurich, Switzerland, FOAM Fotomuseum Amsterdam, a traveling solo exhibition at The Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, and the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston. His work has been included in major group exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of the African Diaspora, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and he was a 2019 contributor to the Whitney Biennal – among many other exhibitions!
Paul’s work explores the studio and darkroom as both a private and public space. His images approach topics around queer and black identity, the nature of representation, and the ways in which images build narratives. Paul’s earliest work is rooted in zine culture and DIY publications. Throughout his career, he has used photography itself as material to create new photographs. He shows not only his own hand in making his images but also the participation and influence of his sitters and audience in constructing the image. We are very excited to have had a chance to talk with him and share his work with you.
Our second feature includes images from our exhibition, The Hand at Fenix Arts, running from Oct. 6 to Nov. 12 at Fenix Arts Gallery in Fayetteville, Arkansas. As part of this feature, we have included a statement by Fenix Arts board member Chuck Davis, who instigated and organized this exhibition with our curatorial input. The feature also includes an interview with photographer Anna Guyton. Anna’s work was submitted to the call for entries and was selected as the winner of a studio residency at Mount Sequoyah, Fayetteville. Anna’s work explores abstract representations of fat and queer bodies through manipulated inkjet prints. We will do a larger feature on Anna’s work in a future issue. For now, we hope you enjoy her work, as well as about a dozen of the 40 or so artists who will participate in the physical exhibition. We will also create an online version of the exhibition after the physical one has ended.
Our third feature is with the very talented draftsman and mezzotint printmaker Raul Pineda Arce. Raul’s work will blow you away with its detail and emotion. Raul’s work explores complicated emotions and stories from within his Mexican cultural landscapes, touching on politics, family dynamics, personal relationships, and poetic narratives.
We are expecting to release the magazine (and by “release,” we mean “put it in the mail”) by October 10th. Thanks to everyone who submitted. You always make editing really difficult, competitive, and a lot of fun. It’s a great challenge, and we appreciate every submission. Remember that if you submitted, you will get a copy of the magazine whether your work is printed or not. Extra copies for subscribers and pre-orders for readers are available at the button below.
